A Trio of Trillium

Red Trillium (Trillium erectum)

While up in Pittsburgh over Mother’s Day weekend, my  Dad and I decided to go out for a short walk on the Armstrong Trail, along the Allegheny River near Kittanning, PA.  Our main purpose was to work off some of puppy-monster’s energy, but we quickly noticed that the border of this trail was just jam-packed with trillium – bonus!

As I was driving back towards Virginia, I noticed abundant trillium blooming in the woods along the side of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.  I’d never noticed this before, and was wondering if I just happened to be paying closer attention this year, or if this is an especially good year for Pennsylvania trillium blooms?

Also Trillium grandiflorum – the white flowers fade to pink as they age.
