A new gardening season

Back to school time.

Labor Day weekend always feels this way to me, even though I’ve been out of school for quite a few years now. I’m sad to see summer coming to an end, I also relish the opportunity to start fresh in a new year.

So, among other getting organized tasks, I took some time this weekend to – as my Pennsylvania Dutch family members would say – ‘red up’ my garden a bit. Vacation was lovely, but the plants were looking more than a little bit straggly due to the warm weather and several weeks of neglect. Nothing that a little bit (or a lot!) of
pruning and deadheading didn’t fix. The changing seasons finally convinced me to give up on the couple of tomato plants that have been straggling along most for of the summer – need to make room for some fall greens!

And, as a bonus, the garden deck now looks presentable enough to host a Labor Day cookout this afternoon. Maybe I’m not quite ready to give up on summer…not today, anyways.
